BCC Live delivered the comp despite its rough, dynamic course, using LU900Q field units with AI-driven decision-making and smart operator selection to optimise connectivity in real time.

LiveU LU900Q IRONMAN Texas NAm Champs

BCC Live, a live event producer, streamer and broadcaster in the US, successfully delivered the 2026 Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Texas North American Championship to fans worldwide. The broadcast marked a milestone, reaching the IRONMAN Pro Series’ largest global audience so far – about 584,000 unique viewers tuned in for 35 minutes or more, representing a 30% increase in viewership over previous years.

For fans around the world, it meant an immersive, up-close view from across the course. The event took place on 18 April in The Woodlands, Texas, where a field of some of the world’s best professional triathletes competed for a $175,000 prize purse. To capture the rigorous 140.6-mile race, BCC Live built a robust remote production workflow that included the LiveU EcoSystem.

For this project, the main devices were four of the new LU900Q field units, which are designed with LiveU IQ (LIQ) AI-powered connectivity. LIQ uses AI-driven decision-making and smart operator selection to optimise the unit’s connectivity in real time and maintain connection in challenging locations.

The system’s combination of eSIM technology integrated into the unit, and optimised 5G modems with a MIMO antenna array, means LU900Q can deliver effectively in terms of speed, stability and throughput. As much about resilience as performance, the ability to dynamically and intelligently switching eSims between operators results in the strongest-possible set of cellular connections for a given location and time.

Stability in Challenging Environments

Delivering a full live broadcast across the dynamic, rough terrain of a triathlon course put the LU900Q to the test. Furthermore, BCC Live deployed the units on motorcycles travelling at 30 mph alongside athletes, on drones for aerial perspectives, and on roaming handheld cameras.

The LU900Q was positioned to play a central role in determining the success of the production. But, despite the tricky nature of the course, which included negotiating tunnels, heavy tree coverings and underpasses, it remained stable throughout the 10-hour live broadcast. The LU900Q performance capabilities, including the 5G architecture + LIQ inside, allowed the predictive cellular operator – which has to depend on variable factors like signal quality, location and network congestion – to automatically switch frequencies in challenging conditions and bypass bottlenecks.

"Though we received our LU900Q units only a week before IRONMAN Texas, we had enough confidence in the functionality to put them straight into place on the motos," said Dave Downey, Owner & Senior Event Specialist at BCC Live. "The technology issues we normally see in productions of this scale didn’t occur.

“The LU900Q outperformed other packs we had used or tested, especially under bridges and trees. Our team could stop worrying about connectivity and focus on the artistry of the production – graphics, GPS tracking and framing the perfect shot."

Global Remote Production Workflow

The production surrounding the LiveU set-up amounted to a sophisticated REMI workflow delivering the broadcast-grade picture and audio quality required for global distribution. Ten LiveU field units captured intense action footage in Texas, which was transmitted back to BCC Live's studio in Boulder, Colorado. There, hosts supplied live commentary as the feed was mixed and distributed to the global audience via YouTube, the proseries.ironman.com website and DAZN, with specialised feeds reaching viewers in the UK, China, Germany and France.

The LiveU deployments were versatile. Two LiveU packs were placed on boats, and then re-purposed into moto packs, two more units were used for further moto coverage, two were placed on drones, two fixed LiveU's were positioned at static camera locations and two LiveU units on electric unicycles (EUCs) weaving through the athletes

Similar to the competitors, the units’ connectivity endured – covering requirements from main broadcast to backup feeds, where the producers were unwilling to compromise on picture and audio quality. The LiveU units brought uninterrupted, high-performance stability across the entire 10-hour broadcast.
